New Congress

"Keith Ellison became the first Muslim congressman in US history on Thursday, taking the oath of office on a Koran that belonged to one of America's most revered founding fathers. "

"Ellison's decision to use the Koran was criticized by a handful of conservatives, who believe the Bible should be used for the oath."

"Using the edition owned by Thomas Jefferson was aimed at symbolizing the freedom of religion that was strongly advocated by the nation's third president (1801-09) and author of the 1776 Declaration of Independence, Ellison has said. "

First I have to say that I'm actually pretty happy about this and being totally optimistic. I hope that he can show people that not all Muslims are terrorists in disguise. Not that everyone thinks that but you know that there are some that do.

I completely disagree with the idiots that thought he should use the Bible for his oath. The Bible doesn't MEAN anything to him, so what good would that have done? Better that he used the Koran, something that means something to him.

And I have to say I think it's pretty cool that Thomas Jefferson owned an edition of the Koran and that he was able to use it for his oath. Hows that for reminding everyone that this country was founded on religious freedom?

Idiot replying here.........
He placed his hand on the Koran (place no false gods before me) took an oath of office in The United States of America, justified his action by symbolizing freedom of religion,no less using Thomas Jefferson i.e. Declaration of Independance,(pilgrims rolling in their graves,IF that were possible)The persecution they ran from was, HELLO, they wanted to worship GOD,freely and openly, you know the ONE who sent Saddam (believer of the Koran)to HELL on Saturday.
I would have had more respect for Ellison if he believed in the Cat in the Hat and swore on it. The Bible is a symbol of FREEDOM in more ways than can be mentioned.
He can show more people that not all Muslims are terrorists.... in my stand up and salute the american soldiers serving in IRAQ.... idiotic opinnion,by placing his hand on one of the symbols that represent the blood and courage of American Soldiers past and present. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!LAND THAT I LOVE!!!
THe book of Witchcraft has a huge following too,so they say, whom ever they are.
Just my thinking but, one small important thread starts to unravel, and next thing you know the uniforms that symbolize the Freedom of America will be next, should a soldier who believes in the wearing of a religious garment be allowed to wear it in place of the traditional regulation Army,Navy,Marine etc.
Just my God given right to chose a different optimism.
If the Bible means nothing to him....hmmmmm....not judging him by any means.....I pray America does matter.
A man can say anything he wants as the truth....it's the talk he walks once he is sworn in that matters. What is in his heart spews out in a mans actions...example:Saturday's Hanged Man.

"A man can say anything he wants as the truth....it's the talk he walks once he is sworn in that matters." Then what difference does it make to anyone whether he swore on the Koran or not? I'm sure that some of the men/women who swear on the Bible do not live by it, so in there case the Bible doesn't mean anything either.

And while I have nothing but the utmost respect for our soldiers, my husband being one of them, they are fighting for their country - not necessarily the Bible. There are all types of religions, not to mention atheists in our military. They are all fighting for a noble cause. If you want him, or anyone, to swear on something that the soldiers are fighting for, they should be swearing on the American flag. Not the Bible.

It was more the "IN GOD WE TRUST" part than the physical book. The fundamental foundation of America, but my whole point was missed.
Also a terrorist is not created in the womb,it is environmental nurturing and teaching and training. Fundamentals of Faith.
I would personally prefer God to be in the book under the hand of a leader being sworn in, even if that is the only part of his life he has allowed God to touch. It's a great start.
Cancer starts with one small defective cell, too small to detect, but spreads faster than a wildfire. Never mind,,,it isn't important.

And God is also in the Koran, just by another name. The Koran describes the Torah and the Scriptures as the true word of God.

I don't claim to be an expert on Islam, but at least I'm willing to try to understand it. And I wonder, if the Congressman were Jewish and wanted to swear on the Torah because he didn't believe in Jesus would you have the same problem? Or not because you know that the Torah's God is the same God as the Bible's? Oh, but you're right, never mind, it isn't important.

(I) believe Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living GOD,and HE is NOT in the TORAH,I do understand that.
I am not judging anyone,I have a plank in my eye,was not a comment of condemnation, was just breezin by the blog.
I happen to be a relative of a hero lost at the Pentagon in 911.
I guess the importance of the act was just worth more to me. The importance of symbolic jestures, ceremonies, monuments, traditional values.
If the President believes in the color purple, let him paint the "White House".
Was not meaning to offend you or sound derogatory. That is one WONDERFUL point about being AMERICAN,Freedom of Speech.Esp. on your part (being a woman)May have been stoned or the such in another Countries.;-)

ICNH - no offense taken and sorry if I seemed a little defensive. I am not used to people that I'm not familiar with responding to my rambling. :)

First, all conservatives are not idiots, lol, although I meant to say Koran and said Torah, blame that on baby with colic.
Second no need to be defensive or apologize.
Third seems when one starts reading a familiar blog, have to check out their friends blogs and 30+ blogs later, ola!
Darn puter.

Thomas Jefferson was a Deists.

Deists believe the existence of a creator could be derived from logic, but that the creator, after making the world, had left it alone and had not intervened in human affairs.
Morals could be reasoned out logically.
Deists believe in such that the Bible was a completely human document,Jesus Christ was an especially good man,but nothing more.
The "Jefferson Bible" was created by Jefferson, removing, with scissors, all reference to the supernatural-such as the virgin birth-the resurrection-and miracles, keeping the parables and the Sermon on the Mount as rational teachings-rather different from "Christian" as defined by most Churches.

In 1802 Jefferson wrote a letter to the Baptist Association of Danbury,Conneticut expressing his "soverighn reverence" for the "wall of eternal seperation between Church and State"
Was he truly one of the founders wanting to create a Christian nation?

Possibly he had a Koran to cut up and add to his "Jefferson Bible".
